The Vera Guide to Fraud Prevention

At Vera, we believe credit should be a source of empowerment, not stress. While we provide bank-grade security to protect your account, staying in control of your financial journey means being aware of the tactics used by bad actors.

This guide outlines how you can partner with us to keep your credit—and your identity—secure.

1. Online Security: Your First Line of Defense

Modern credit belongs in a modern environment. Ensure your home Wi-Fi is encrypted with a strong password. Avoid managing your Vera account or making purchases on public Wi-Fi networks (like those in cafes or airports), as these are often unencrypted and vulnerable to "man-in-the-middle" attacks.

2. Password and PIN Security

Treat your credentials like the keys to your home.

  • Unique Passwords: Never reuse passwords across different sites. If one site is compromised, a unique password ensures your Vera account remains safe.
  • The PIN Protocol: Your PIN is for your eyes only. Vera will never ask you for your PIN over the phone or via email.

3. Phishing: Spotting the Fake

Phishing is an attempt to trick you into revealing sensitive info by pretending to be a trusted source.

  • The Vera Standard: We will never send you an unsolicited link asking for your login credentials or Social Security number.
  • Check the Source: Always verify that the sender's email address matches our official domain (@vera.credit). When in doubt, don't click; go directly to our app or website. If you receive a suspicious email, forward it to care@vera.credit.

4. Social Engineering: The Art of Manipulation

Fraudsters often use high-pressure tactics or emotional appeals to get you to lower your guard. They might claim your account is "frozen" or that there is an "urgent reward" waiting.

  • Stay Calm: Legitimate institutions will give you time to verify information. If someone is rushing you to provide data or move money, it’s a red flag.

5. Sharing Financial Information Online

Be mindful of where you leave your digital footprint.

  • Social Media: Avoid sharing photos of your physical Vera card or details about your credit limit on social platforms.
  • Secure Checkout: Only shop on websites that use https:// (the "s" stands for secure) and show a padlock icon in the browser bar.

6. Credit Card Fraud & Virtual Cards

Vera offers advanced tools to mitigate traditional card fraud.

  • Virtual Cards: Use virtual cards for online subscriptions or one-time purchases. If a merchant’s database is hacked, your primary card number remains untouched.
  • Real-Time Alerts: Enable push notifications in the Vera app to see every transaction the moment it happens.

7. Phone Scams & SIM Swapping

Scammers may "spoof" our caller ID to make it look like Vera is calling.

  • Verification: If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and call us back directly at 1-800-769-1306.
  • SIM Swapping: If your phone suddenly loses service in an area where you usually have a signal, contact your mobile carrier immediately. Fraudsters may be trying to hijack your phone number to bypass MFA.

8. Mobile Security

Your phone is your primary interface with Vera. Keep it locked.

  • Biometrics: Use FaceID or Fingerprint recognition for an extra layer of security.
  • Updates: Keep your mobile OS and the Vera app updated to ensure you have the latest security patches.

9. Email Security

Email is a common entry point for malware.

  • Attachments: Never open attachments from unknown senders claiming to be "invoices" or "account statements."
  • Official Channels: Vera communicates important account updates through our secure app inbox and verified email addresses ending in @vera.credit.

10. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

MFA is one of the most effective ways to stop unauthorized access. By requiring a second form of verification (like a code sent to your device), it ensures that even if a hacker has your password, they can't get into your account. Always keep MFA enabled.

11. Identity & Family Protection

Your credit score is a reflection of your financial health.

  • Family Cards: If you use our family card options, ensure all authorized users understand these security protocols. A compromised secondary card can affect your primary account.
  • Credit Monitoring: Regularly check your credit report for unauthorized inquiries.

12. Lost or Stolen Physical Cards

If your physical Vera card is lost or stolen, do not wait.

  • Instant Freeze: Use the Vera app to freeze the card immediately. This prevents any new transactions while you look for it or wait for a replacement.

13. How to Report Suspicious Activity

If you notice a transaction you didn't make, or if you suspect your account has been compromised, take immediate action:

  • Freeze Your Card: Open the Vera app and use the "Freeze" toggle to instantly disable your card.
  • Contact Us: Call our dedicated fraud team at 1-800-769-1306 or email us at care@vera.credit.
  • Review: We will work with you to investigate the activity and issue a replacement card if necessary.
